Global styrene long-term outlook H1 2019

Report summary

Overall, margins in 2019 will be lower globally compared to what we have seen in recent years, where unplanned outages squeezed global availability and drove prices higher. This could be seen as a transition period into the early 2020s, when the global market starts to lengthen with the new world-scale capacity additions in China coming online. This will have a significant impact on global trade flows, which have already started to shift considerably since the implementation of China's antidumping duties in mid-2018. With the Chinese net deficit gradually reducing through the early 2020s, and the likelihood of more US capacity being built by the middle of next decade, higher-cost producers will face growing pressure as margins come down.
