Olefins - Ethylene Americas Monthly Market Overview January 2020

Report summary

January US ethylene spot prices assessed at Mont Belvieu have increased to 18.4 cts/lb month to date, up about 1 ct/lb from the December average. The November and December contract prices settled at 29.50 and 27.00 cts/lb, respectively. Spot margins rolled over month over month as ethylene prices increases were offset by feedstock increases. Available capacity has quickly increased in January. From early December 2019 to publication date, about 3800kta of production capacity has entered the market and is in various stages of ramp-up. Demand is expected to decrease into January after a strong December. Lyondellbasell’s HDPE unit is expected to begin production in the next month, while Formosa has delayed their LDPE unit startup to April and Sasol’s LDPE startup is expected to be delayed after an explosion and fire at the plant.
