Report summary

Blackhawk Mining is a privately owned coal mining and marketing company headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky. The company became a new entrant into Appalachia in 2012 with its Pine Branch purchase and grew rapidly in 2014-2015 after purchasing assets from James River, Patriot, Arch, and Rhino coal companies. The company operates surface and underground thermal and metallurgical mines in Central Appalachia. As of 2017, Blackhawk is no longer producing coal in the Illinois Basin.
