Report summary

China's coal demand has peaked in 2013 at 4.4 billion tons. Economic restructuring away from investment led growth overcapacity as well as environmental policies continue to weigh down on coal demand. In the near term market outlook will be dominated by supply side reforms. Longer term environmental and economic factors will determine coal's outlook. Despite its waning coal demand China remains an important determinant in seaborne supply and demand balance.
