Asset Report
Coal company report – Peabody: Powder River Basin – May 2023
Report summary
Peabody has three operating mines in the Powder River Basin: North Antelope Rochelle (NARM), Caballo and Rawhide. North Antelope Rochelle is one of the largest mines in the world, although output has been dramatically reduced since 2019. Average costs rose in 2022-2023 due to inflation, high fuel costs, labour, maintenance, and overburden removal in addition to higher sales-related coasts. Poor rail service in the western US contributed to higher costs, but the railroads have performed better in 2023. Lower coal prices are also making a comeback. All Peabody PRB coal is marketed domestically to utility customers.
