Global metallurgical coal short-term outlook June 2016

Global metallurgical coal short-term outlook June 2016

Report summary

Glencore and Nippon Steel Sumitomo Metals agreed to a price of US$92.50/t for Q3 2016. The settlement followed a rapid rise in spot prices in April and early May to over US$100/t, and more recently at around US$90/t. Although the new contract price is in the right direction for producers, 16% of the global production would still be making negative margins. Increases from Grosvenor and Moztize and an easing of Chinese mine restrictions will put downward price pressure on Q4.
