India coal short-term outlook December 2015

India coal short-term outlook December 2015

Report summary

There was a marginal increase in prices of domestic coal sold by Coal India Limited (CIL) on the spot market in September and October, however, the average price realization (premium paid over regulated prices) was 44% in 2015, down from 68% last year. The drop in domestic coal price realization seems to align with the trend seen in the seaborne market where all types of coal imports (low, mid or high energy) delivered into India shed over 20% since January 2015. Domestic production is rising but can it remain competitive to imports in coastal locations?
