Coal shortage in the domestic market restricted operations of nearly 12GW of coal-fired plants. Some of the state utilities reverted to imported coal. Non-power sector, which was receiving lesser coal, resorted to imports too. Environmental restrictions on use of petroleum coke further supported increase in thermal coal imports. So, what all led to this? Are these increased imports going to sustain? In this report, we try to understand these questions and other related queries on the domestic pricing and its impact on the demand and supply in the short-term.
