Invierno coal mine
Report summary
Invierno had a nameplate capacity of 6 Mtpa but the highest output ever reached was 4.7 Mt in 2014. Weak market conditions have plagued the mine since 2015 and ultimately led to its closure. There are no plans to reopen the mine in the future. Most of Chile's coal-fired generating units are built for burning bituminous coals. Therefore, Invierno's sub-bituminous coal product had a difficult time penetrating the domestic market. Plants that did take it would use it as a blend in boilers. It was difficult for the coal to compete on the international market with low cost sub-bituminous competitors, such as Indonesia.
