Report summary

Strong seaborne coal markets and volatile natural gas prices had a powerful effect on US coal markets. Spot prices were driven higher in response to high ARA and Newcastle prices, even as domestic supply/demand dynamics suggest weak conditions. Annual Henry Hub natural gas prices are expected to fall 8% between 2017 and 2018 and in response to that competitive threat, coal generation will fall 3%.
