North America coal short-term outlook January 2018: Winter is here

Report summary

January started off with blizzard-like conditions that halted shipments through the Hampton Roads coal exporting region and up the Chesapeake Bay. To further aggravate the delays, there were reported issues with coal freezing in the train cars, and the Upper Ohio river was closed for a week due to ice and runaway barges. Utilities have enough coal on hand to meet their needs without great concerns, even though the rate of burn at coal-fired plants exceeded the rate of new deliveries during the weather-related disruption.
