Commodity Market Report
North America coal short-term outlook January 2019: The Polar Vortex strikes again
Report summary
Although January is ending with bone chilling Arctic-like temperatures over much of the eastern US, natural gas markets seem to have shrugged off the increased demand and forward prices are moderating quickly. US domestic thermal coal consumption will drop rapidly as the year progresses just as new capacity comes on line. Spot prices will not be able to sustain current levels and will fall as 2019 advances.
