North America coal short-term outlook January 2021: New administration, but does the CPP return?
Report summary
The new administration of President Joe Biden has brought a flurry of change that will have a permanent impact on domestic coal markets. The President issued an executive order that makes his election pledge of a carbon free electricity sector by 2035 official policy. The US has reentered the Paris Climate accords and a 60-day moratorium on fossil fuel leasing on federal land were all quickly implemented. While we do not expect significant new coal leases to be needed, the moratorium also applies to the approval of mining plans on current leases.
