North America coal short-term outlook July 2018: Warm and wet summer

Report summary

Warmer than normal weather appeared with a bang by late July, driving domestic prompt month prices upward slightly by the end of the month. Coal-fired generation in May 2017 was 11 TWh above May of the previous year. We forecast coal-generation for the last seven months of 2017 to be 1.5% below the same period last year, as higher natural gas prices are off-set by normal weather.
