North America coal short-term outlook June 2018: Trade wars spreading malaise

Report summary

Without federal policy changes on the horizon, domestic demand for all thermal coals will continue to face stiff competition as more gas and renewable capacity comes online. The export markets and metallurgical markets are still healthy and there have been some recent announcements of US mines expanding, reopening, or planning to reopen in the near-term. However, we have yet to see how the administration's trade war and a new round of tariffs will play out.
