North America coal short-term outlook March 2016

North America coal short-term outlook March 2016

Report summary

Spring 2016 will be grim for coal producers and coal-fired generation. Low electricity demand due to mild weather and a glut of natural gas will contribute to driving spring coal generation to levels 23% below 2015 and 33% below the five year average. Meanwhile coal inventories are at high levels and natural gas prices have been well below US$2.00/mmbtu at Henry Hub. With coal demand so low the spot markets can be expected to be quiet for some time.
