Commodity Market Report
North America Coal Short-term Outlook March 2023
Report summary
Domestic coal demand continued lagging though March amid warm weather and uncompetitive natural gas prices. Q1 2023 was one of the weakest 3-month periods on record for coal generation – second only to the infamous spring of 2020. With both coal and gas producers showing little signs of slowing down, coal buyers will quickly find themselves oversupplied. A supply response or a strong demand rebound during the summer months could alleviate some the supply-demand mismatch. But until then, coal prices will continue their decline.
