North America coal short-term outlook May 2018: US coal exports keep summer markets hot

Report summary

Eastern US spot thermal coal prices will remain elevated this summer as producers, railroads and ports struggle to satisfy export demand - demand that has suddenly developed due to a spike in international coal prices and abetted by a realization that US high sulphur coals can be a bargain compared to petcoke. Eastern thermal spot prices will remain high this summer despite international coal prices beginning to trend downwards.
