North America coal short-term outlook November 2017: Risks to coal demand this winter

Report summary

Despite a chilly start to November, weather forecasters are calling for a higher chance of a mild La Niña winter season again this year. This will mean slightly warmer than normal temperature across much of the US. and the possibility of lower than expected coal-fired generation. Coal generation is already expected to be challenged going into next year, as an increase in natural gas production is likely to weaken gas and coal prices.
