Commodity Market Report
North America coal short-term outlook September 2022
Report summary
With a potentially devastating railroad strike averted, rail service improved in September with the highest number of weekly railcar deliveries yet this year. In addition, daily thermal coal production averaged nearly 1.4 Mst in September, over 11% higher than the first 8 months of 2022. If coal deliveries continue at August and September levels, utilities will be better positioned to meet winter demand and stocks could rebuild to over 90 Mst by next spring.
