Commodity Market Report
North America short-term outlook December 2022
Report summary
Strong coal production through the shoulder season has allowed coal generators to build their stockpiles and position themselves for success through the winter. Utilities have been notably frugal with their stockpiles the last two winters. Weather and gas fundamentals will determine if the trend is reversed this season. Strong coal burn in early December and more cold weather on the way suggests that coal units are, in fact, taking advantage of recent gas price increases.
