Commodity Market Report
North America thermal coal short-term outlook June 2015
Report summary
The US coal market continued to undergo structural change in June aimed at right sizing the industry and re-aligning supply with falling demand. Coal demand is eroded by retiring power plants and competition from low-cost natural gas. We are seeing the effects of an over-supplied domestic and international market where coal buyers have an upper hand in negotiations and prices are falling in search of a floor.
