Powder River Basin coal markets long-term outlook H2 2013

Powder River Basin coal markets long-term outlook H2 2013

Report summary

The Powder River Basin (PRB) is forecast to see strong growth in total demand over study period – at 39% over 2013 production levels.  By 2035, PRB coal will expand significantly into the thermal export market, at the expense of moderate domestic market share losses.  The region should be able to handle this growth in the face of regulatory and competitive challenges tackled by all US coal basins.  PRB production in 2012 and 2013 was low by historical standards at 419 and 418 Mst, respectively.  2012 production was heavily curtailed by a warmer than normal winter and large coal-to-gas switching.  Production levels were kept lower in 2013, to allow burn down of the excess stockpiles built-up during the warm winter and low gas prices of 2012.
