Australia energy markets outlook 2015 - coal

Australia energy markets outlook 2015 - coal

Report summary

Australia's coal production is driven by export demand as domestic requirement is limited. Due to the weakening seaborne demand, particularly from North East Asia, and softening global prices, production growth is expected to be suppressed in the near term, as operators defer expansion projects and review capital spending. From 2019 onwards, improvements in global demand could assist recovery, supporting higher production growth during 2020 – 2030. Costs reductions in the coal sector have been achieved, with the average costs decreased by 10% on average in 2014, driven by a weakening Australian dollar, lower diesel prices and the abolition of carbon tax.
