Bangladesh energy markets long-term outlook 2016

Report summary

After a strong decade of economic progress, Bangladesh is facing the same challenges as many emerging countries - the energy requirement of its economy starting to outstrip available domestic supply. Legacy gas reserves that supported its economic development so far will begin to decline, and the planned transition to coal faces local issues and financial obstacles. We forecast Bangladesh's total energy demand to reach 66 Mtoe by 2035, an increase of 61% from 2015 levels. With the country needing huge investments to expand its energy infrastructure, it is imperative the government brings through energy pricing reforms and enhances regulatory transparency. Key themes in this update: LNG imports set to begin from 2018 Energy co-operation between Bangladesh and India increases Coal ambitions challenged in a post-COP 21 world
