Bitumen extraction form the Canadian oil (or tar) sands represents about 48% of the total oil production of 4.3 mbl/d.  Canada's net oil exports are going to rise due to higher oil sands production. Most petroleum exports will continue to go to the United States by pipeline but new capacity will allow oil production to be exported west.  Canadian transportation demand is almost  third of total oil demand, with relatively low fleet efficiency compared to Europe, and high vehicle ownership levels
