Green hydrogen: A catalyst for renewables in the Middle East and Africa?
Report summary
With approximately 11 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) in announced green hydrogen projects, the Middle East and Africa account for almost 20% of the global pipeline of electrolyser plants – the third largest region after APAC and Europe. Regional markets like Egypt, Oman and Mauritania are betting on becoming green hydrogen super-producers. These countries count on exceptional wind and solar resources and vast expanses of cheap available land, resulting in favourable costs for renewable energy production. Despite the region’s potential for green hydrogen development, there is considerable uncertainty around the prospects for these projects. In addition to estimating how much renewable capacity would be driven by green hydrogen development, this insight provides a detailed account of key emerging green hydrogen markets in the region and sheds light on the fundamental questions affecting the viability of these projects.
