India energy month in brief - Understanding India's oil demand surge
Report summary
In our every month-in-brief, we explore the latest developments and themes happening across India's upstream, downstream, gas, coal and power sectors. Latest figures suggest that India's oil demand went up by 405 kb/d in Q1 2016. In this edition, we look behind the various drivers that is fuelling the rapid growth. Besides the key fuels - diesel, gasoline and LPG, petroleum coke contributed 15% to the demand growth in FY 2016 (April 2015 - March 2016). More significantly, India's oil demand crossed 4 million barrels/day in Q1 2016. When China crossed the 4 million mark back in 1999, that marked the beginning of a decade long boom. We contrast the differences between the make-up of India's demand today and China's demand back then.
