India power markets long-term outlook 2016

Report summary

India will be one the largest growing power market in the world over the next 20 years. We estimate power demand to grow at an average 6.3% p.a. through 2035 as India enters a period of faster industrialisation, urbanisation and rising living standards. Despite a robust outlook, the power sector is struggling with excess generation capacity and declining margins. The government has launched a number of reforms to reduce the default risks by the generation and distribution companies. Coal will continue to form the majority share in the generation mix, but the operations of the power system will evolve to cope with a growing share of renewable generation from wind and solar going forward. Key themes in this update: UDAY package for the struggling distribution sector Solar sector investments heat up Revisions to tariff policy to guide tariff setting, power procurement and high renewable purchase obligations
