Myanmar is generating a lot of excitement in the international arena after years of isolation during the military rule. The landslide victory by the National League for Democracy, led by popular opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, in the April 2012 by-election was ‘well received’ by external observers. Responding to the economic and political reforms by the new civilian government, Western economies eased the economic sanctions placed on the previous military junta.
