South Africa gas markets long-term outlook 2016

South Africa gas markets long-term outlook 2016

Report summary

The South Africa gas market is essentially two demand centres - one in the Western Cape, and another in the Eastern Cape. The gas demand profiles are driven by Mossel Bay GTL in the Western Cape, and the Sasolburg industrial complex in the Eastern Cape. Mossel Bay GTL is expected to continue operation below capacity in order to extend the life of the plant in the hope that this will provide enough time to secure alternative gas supplies; we assume that the plant will be able to run until 2030. Over the forecast, gas comes into the power sector through LNG imports.

Description

Due to their sensitivity to political events and the global economy, energy demand and trade remain extremely volatile. The rapidly changing cost environment for hydrocarbon production and renewable energy, combined with energy policy changes, means the fuel mix in energy markets can be unpredictable at best. Further complicating the outlook is the transition and pace of the energy-intensive developing world from industrial to services-based economic growth, supporting the growing need for power generation.
