Uruguay energy markets outlook 2014

Uruguay energy markets outlook 2014

Report summary

Since most energy is imported and relatively expensive, demand has been constrained by price.  Furthermore, the climate does not require much/any space heating.  As the country gets wealthier the use of air conditioning will increase but with average summer high temperatures in Montevideo of 28 C, the demand for space cooling is limited.  The prevalence of hydro, and in the future renewables, in the power sector also limits total energy demand.  This is because hydro and renewables do not use a traditional fuel and for modelling purposes we assume it is 100% efficient.  By contrast oil fired generation in Uruguay is roughly 40% efficient.  Despite its small size, there are many interesting and dynamic trends in Uruguay.

Due to their sensitivity to political events and the global economy, energy demand and trade remain extremely volatile. The rapidly changing cost environment for hydrocarbon production and renewable energy, combined with energy policy changes, means the fuel mix in energy markets can be unpredictable at best. Further complicating the outlook is the transition and pace of the energy-intensive developing world from industrial to services-based economic growth, supporting the growing need for power generation.
