North America gas markets short-term outlook March 2016

North America gas markets short-term outlook March 2016

Report summary

After a warm winter and a mild March, one of the questions on everyone's mind is the storage surplus, which is close to the 2012 record at 845 bcf above the five-year average. The market will have to be 1.8 bcfd tighter on average over the injection season to manage the surplus. We think this is certainly possible, as power looks to burn more, LNG and Mexican imports ramp up, and production will fall. So long as weather holds close to seasonal norms, prices are more likely to strengthen from today's cash levels than to weaken through April and May.
