Colombia's first LNG regas terminal, SPEC LNG,  started operations in November 2016 in Cartagena on the Atlantic coast. This project was envisioned to counter declining indigenous gas production and concerns over weather-driven power supply volatility, as well as provide a lower-emission alternative to coal power plants and security of supply. To date, many other regasification projects have been proposed, including on the Pacific coast.
