The Asanko project was derived from the combination of two standalone (Obotan & Esaase) projects. The Obotan deposit will be developed as Phase 1, while the Esaase deposit will be developed as Phase 2. Both deposits will be mined by open-pit methods. Ore from Esaase will be transported 27km by overland conveyor to a carbon in leach plant at Obotan. Commercial production (Phase 1) was declared in April 2016 and board approval for Phase 2 expansion (5Mt/a expansion) was announced in November. In 2016, 148koz of gold was produced as the mill operated 20% above nameplate capacity at 3.6Mt/a. For 2017, full year gold production is estimated at 205 - 225koz.
