Escobal zinc mine
Report summary
Escobal exploits an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal quartz vein deposit through longhole stoping methods. Processing is by conventional differential flotation methods that produce lead-silver and zinc concentrates. The processing plant has a maximum capacity of 4.5ktpd. Bagged concentrates are transported in 20-tonne containers by truck approximately 120km to Quetzal port. As of 5 July 2017, the mining licence was temporarily suspended. On 3 September 2018, the Constitutional Court of Guatemala outlined a detailed three-stage consultation process to reinstate the mining licence. Following the suspension of the mining licence, the operation was placed under care and maintenance.
