Fort Knox is an open pit gold mine and is owned and operated by Kinross. The mine has a capacity of 92Mt/a. Higher grade ore is treated by conventional mill whilst lower grade material is crushed and then stacked on heap leach pads. The gold solution from the mill and heap leach pads is further treated in a carbon plant to recover a gold/silver doré. The mill has a capacity of up to 45ktpd. Large volumes of lower-grade ore and mineralized waste materials are processed via heap leaching.
