Report summary

The Gamsberg Project is located between the towns of Aggeneys and Pofadder, in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The current proposal is to adopt conventional open pit mining techniques in order to produce 250,000 tonnes of zinc in concentrate a year. Vedanta Resources Plc had approved a US$782 million investment over a 3 year period, approximately US$630 million of which was to be used to develop the open pit mine whilst the remaining US$152 million was to be used to convert the Skorpion Zinc Refinery in neighbouring Namibia. The overall capital expenditure for the mine and the mill has been reportedly reduced to US$400 million, as of March 2017 US$63 million had been spent to date.
