On 7 August Glencore announced it would place its Mutanda copper-cobalt mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on ‘care and maintenance’ by the end of 2019 due to ‘reduced economic viability in the current market environment’. The removal of Mutanda supply is likely to have a significant impact on the cobalt market given it is the biggest cobalt producing mine in the world. Last year Mutanda produced 27.3 kt of cobalt in hydroxide, and 199 kt of copper.
