The Harita Group's smelter project Megah Surya Pertiwi in Indonesia is planning to utilise Rotary Kiln Submerged Arc Furnace (RK SAF) technology to produce 190kt of ferronickel per year. The operation is expected to consist of three operating lines requiring 120MW of power. In June 2015 the Harita Group held a 'groundbreaking' ceremony and estimated that construction of the smelter would take place over a two year period at a cost of around US$320 million. On October 9 2016 production commenced at the NPI RKEF operation in North Maluka Indonesia. The smelter capacity is 190kt/a (gross) and NPI is expected to grade around 10 12% Ni. Capital costs were updated and estimated at approximately US$300 million.
