Hope Downs 1 iron ore mine

Report summary

Hope Downs 1 is a large surface mine with a production capacity of 31Mtpa. It is a 50:50 JV between Rio Tinto and Hancock, located 75 kilometres north-west of Newmanin Western Australia's Pilbara region. Hope Downs 1 is split between three deposits, Hope Downs North, Hope Downs South, and Baby Hope. All are primarily Marra Mamba deposits, with 60% of Hope Downs North below the water table. Despite mining below the water table, Hope Downs 1's high productivity and low strip ratio keep its costs on par with Rio Tinto's other Pilbara operations.
