Country Report
India iron ore supply summary: from top three exporter to top three net importer?
Report summary
The current version of the India iron ore supply summary looks into mine-wise production of iron ore from the key 11 iron ore miners in India. And we also seek to answer the question – can India transition from a top-three exporter of iron ore to potentially a significant importer over the long term? India exported more than 50% of its iron ore production in 2010. But restrictions imposed by the Supreme Court on illegal mining reduced exports. The Indian government also took several steps to conserve ores for the growing domestic steel industry. And in recent years, price arbitrage has opened up doors for the seaborne imports as well. We seek to answer whether India will be able to sustain its domestic production over the long term overcoming environmental, forestry, evacuation, and land acquisition challenges. Or will the imports grow not only because of the arbitrage opportunities but also because of the domestic scarcity?
