This report discusses the negative impacts of informal mining and the ways in which governments, miners and refiners are endeavouring to provide opportunities for those that want to extract gold responsibly, whilst preventing the illegal mining of gold. Informal mining is often associated with environmental violations due to improper management of toxic chemicals, loss of life due to unsafe working conditions, child labour exploitation, and corruption. It is not then entirely surprising that for some this tarnishes their perception of the gold industry. Through our research to establish data coverage on 100% of gold supply we have produced a unique insight into the informal gold mining sector, which is rife amongst some of the largest gold producing nations.
