Jaguarari copper mine

Report summary

Mineracao Caraiba S.A. (Jaguarari) operates a mining and milling complex in the Curaçá Valley.  By 2017 it was operating the old Pilar Underground mine and the Suçuarana and Surubim open pits. By the beginning of 2018 open pit ore was expected to be depleted and instead the Vermelhos underground mine was expected to enter in operations in that year. Vermelhos is located 80km from the current mill and the Surubin is located at 33km from the mill. Initially (since 1979) the concentrator had a capacity of 20kt/d ore operating with four ball mills. In 1999 two of the four ball mills were sold, reducing the milling capacity to 9.2kt/d ore or 3.3Mt/a which is the current (2018) mill capacity. The Jaguarari mill operates well below its current capacity due to lack of mine ore.
