Kashima NSSMC steel plant

Report summary

Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation's (NSSMC) Kashima plant is based to the east of Tokyo in Kashima City, Ibaraki prefecture. The Kashima works specializes in the manufacture of high value-added finished products including steel sheet and plates, pipe and tube and steel shapes. The plant supplies sheet products mainly for automotive and household electronics applications. Some of the coke batteries at Kashima are more than 40 years old and inefficient. NSSMC will invest US$250 million over the next three years to construct a new 0.6Mtpa coke battery that will replace some of the ageing facilities.
