Kiruna iron ore mine

Report summary

Kiruna is the largest iron ore mine owned by Swedish state-owned mining company LKAB. It is in the process of expanding production to 18Mtpa. Kiruna is an underground mine that is operating at a depth of more than 1 kilometre. Kiruna's production expansion is difficult as it involves shifting the town of Kiruna and increasing the mining depth to more than 1.3 kilometres. The depth of the mine makes it one of the highest cost iron ore suppliers to the seaborne market.
