Report summary

Kiruna is the largest iron ore mine owned by Swedish state owned mining company LKAB. It produces 13Mtpa of iron ore pellets and will eventually expand to 20Mtpa as part of LKAB's company wide target to produce 37Mtpa. It is an underground mine that is operating at a depth of 1 kilometre. Kiruna's production expansion is difficult as it involves shifting the town of Kiruna and increasing the mining depth to more than 1.3 kilometres. The depth of the mine makes it one of the highest cost iron ore suppliers to the seaborne market.
