Malmberget iron ore mine

Report summary

The underground Malmberget mine is one of the most geographically north iron ore mines on the planet. Located in the Swedish province of Lapland, it is wholly owned by the Swedish state owned mining firm, LKAB. It produces a total of 8Mtpa consisting of iron ore pellets and fines. LKAB has had to implement an "urban transformation plan" to relocate the local community as part of continuing operations at Malmberget. Based on reported provisions and historical costs we estimate Malmberget's annual urban transformation cost will average US$40 million a year from 2018 to 2035.
