Mincor - South Kambalda closed nickel operation
Report summary
Mincor's South Kambalda operations have included the Miitel, Mariners, Redross and Wannaway mines. In 2014 and 2015 only Mariners and Miitel were in production. In January 2016, Mincor announced that mining would stop at the end of the month and that the operation would be placed on care and maintenance. The operation produced only 2.3kt of nickel in ore in the second half of 2015. The future of the Mariners resource is uncertain, given that accessible ore has been depleted, while at Miitel the possibilities for a re-start look brighter because substantial developed ore remains easily accessible. The closure meant a further reduction in feed received by BHP Billiton at Nickel West' s Kalgoorlie smelter and Kwinana refinery.
