Paraopeba - Mar Azul iron ore mine

Report summary

Mar Azul is a mid-sized surface mine and part of Vale's Paraopeba complex, ultimately falling under Vale's Southern System operations. The mine is located in Brazil's Quadrilátero Ferrífero (QF) region and approximately 20 kilometres south-west of the city of Belo Horizonte. Production at Mar Azul was halted in 2014 as reserves were depleted. After conducting new exploration campaigns and redesigning the mine's geological model, Vale was able to identify additional reserves. As a result, production at Mar Azul was brought back online in 2017.
