Report summaryTahara is a relatively new EAF steel plant owned by Tokyo Steel which has undergone a troubled start. Tokyo Steel initially announced its plans for a new EAF in 2006 and purchased a 2.5 Mtpa, 420 tonne, twin-shaft EAF as well as a ladle furnace and vacuum degasser. The initial plan was for the plant to be commissioned in October 2009 but the global financial crisis meant that production did not begin until June 2010. Annual crude steel production is yet to reach 1 million tonnes.
